21st Century Learning and Student Choices

As educators we say that we are preparing students for the 21st century.  Yet we may be severely limiting that preparation by not giving students real choices.

Do our students have a choice about

1) How they will present their learning?  There are many Web 2.0  tools available today. The students’ presentation tool should not matter as long as they fully demonstrate their learning at a high level.

2) What topics they can use to demonstrate their learning?  Do we give students a single topic?  A choice from a list of topics? Or are students free to pursue their own topic?

3) What resources they use?  Are they limited to printed material?  Can they use Internet based resources such as  contacting an “expert” via Skype?  Can they use visual material such as photos from Flickr?

Our students will never be life-long learners for the 21st century century if we  make the choices for them.

Oprah’s OnlineBook Club and Your Use of Technology

I joined Oprah’s online book club not just for the great book but to see how she does a book club online. I was intrigued by whom she had skype in, call in, or email in. I’m sure that she received thousands of online requests. I think that one criteria was location – she selected a person from China and another from Germany to show the world wide nature of the show. Each speaker was easy to understand, no heavy accents, only native English speaking people. She would wait to bring the outsider in until when they were at a particular point in the discussion. Each person amplified the topic that was being discussed at that moment. Since this online book club was live, I am sure that her staff was screening calls, synthesizing what book point each person was making, and deciding where that book point fit into where the discussion was in the show. Then someone made decisions as to which people best expanded or probed deeper into the book and forwarded that information to Oprah. She then waited to introduce the person at the appropriate moment. Did it work? Definitely. Powerfully.

How do we as teachers bring in appropriate resources at the “right” time to amplify what we are teaching? Do we have these electronic resources ready to bring into the classroom? Do the resources show a wide range of thinking to allow our students to explore the topic in-depth?

LifeLong Learning-Part 3: Students Learn From Their Peers, Teachers, Mentors

Students learn from

A third aspect of lifelong learner is learning from different types of “teachers.” Students can learn from the classroom teacher but they can also learn from peers and mentors. Since our students will be on their own after their graduate from school/college, we can help them to see the value in learning from others.

How do we foster learning from others?
Do we have students work collaboratively where they learn from each other? (Collaborative work is very different than group work.)
Do we encourage collaborations that go beyond the classroom such as getting help through IM, Skype, etc from people who live in other locations?
Do we have our students teach a concept to other students in distant locations and have other students teach our students through Web resources such as videoconferencing?
Do we help our students to create instructional videos on standards based topic for YouTube?
Do we have them work with a mentor in a field of their interest through email, Skype, phone calls, etc.?
Do we encourage our students to participate in a blog on an standards based topic and share their learning with the class?
Do we have our students contribute to a Wiki about a standards based topic? To correct others?
Do we ask students to research and create their own topic report through connecting with an expert and bringing that expert virtually into the classroom?
Do we help students to assess the “teachings” of others?

Web 2.0, Social Networking, and Students’ Learning

WEB 2.0

The big buz is Web 2.0 and social networking. I think that we need to redefine social networking to focus on student learning. “Social” does not necessarily imply academic learning. “Networking” does not necessarily imply academic learning. Students social network now when they IM, Skype, use social bookmarking, etc. The question is what academic learning they are doing. I know that almost none of my sons’ IMing was about education!

How will we have our students use these tools to improve their academic learning? It is up to us to structure their learning so that they can use social networking networks to grow academically. Let’s encourage their collaboration in higher-level thinking projects!

Skype Video Conferencing: Home Use to School Possibilities

I finally used Skype. I gave both my sons webcams and headphone mikes for the Christmas. One son is about 500 miles away so he does not get home much. We had no trouble connecting. He found out that he had to get the camera working first, restart Skype and then we could see each other. The joy of seeing him with all his facial expressions was heart warming. He got to show us the “computer room” by panning his webcam and to show us his new “toys” by holding them up to the camera.
The sound was quite good and the video quality of the camera was OK (a little grainy and quick movement became a slur on the screen). It reminded me of the early days of CUSeeme but with much better quality.

I thought of some possibilities for Skype in school:

-Shadowing a professional as she/he works

-Talking with people in labs, research centers, art studios, museums, “on location”

-Watching an expert do something or explain something (Your neighbor who does composting can explain it to the class and show her compost to them.)

-Class to class collaborative videoconferencing (not having to bring a big videoconferencing unit in the class and not having to go to the videoconferencing room is a big plus.) in all subject aeas.

-Conversing in the second language to people from that language area

– Watching an event such as a school play, a poetry jam, science demonstration (egg drop), etc.

– Another teacher from another district can help you co-teach your class since that teacher is an expert in the topic your students are doing.
-Mentor (A master teacher can watch your class and then give suggestions)

Skype presents a great example of bringing the world into our classroom and going into the world with our classroom. Did I mention it was free!!!!

Where does Learning Really Take Place? School Classroom or At-Home Technology

In the school hallway, I heard Butch comment to Nancy that he did not get today’s math so he was going to get his buddy to help him. He commented that he would have to wait until his buddy got online. Nancy asked where the buddy lived. Butch replied that he lived in China.

I overhead two students talking as they were leaving school. Jack was complaining about not understanding the Social Studies lesson. Pam responded that he just had to go on the net and find a good explanation. She shared with him a site, http://www.pinkmonkey.com, that she used. She added that she always went to the site to understand or even to review the Social Studies topic.

Pedro’s confusion about his science learning has been solved by his IMing his friends and asking them to explain the information. His friends from all over the country explained the science principle in their own words and gave some great examples.

Ming has difficulties in school. He always asks his teacher what the next topic is. Then he does a web search for a visual explanation of the concept so that he can see the “big picture” of the topic. He searches for visuals about the topic. Only by “previewing” the topic can he begin to understand what the teacher is explaining.

Sara asks for school work help on a regular basis. She videoconferences (Skypes) with her cousins who are her age but live across the country.

Leo calls a friend whenever he needs to learn about a topic. She puts it in words Leo can understand.
