Instructional Uses of Clickers or Personal Response Systems

We can use clickers in many different ways in our classroom. Here’s a few. We can ask the students:

Background questions such as “Have you ever explained to someone the reasons you wanted to buy something? 1-Yes 2- No”

Learning style questions such as “How long did it take you to do the essay? 1-30 2- 40 3- 50 4- 60 + minutes”
Or “Which part of the essay was the hardest to do 1-Identify a topic 2- Pre-Write 3- Write topic sentences 4- Provide vivid details”

Low thinking level review questions such as “An effect essay 1-shows similarities between two things 2- tells a story of a change 3- gives details about a process 4- provides the results of something ”

Higher-level thinking questions such as “Which body paragraph in this essay has the most concrete examples? 1- first 2-second 3-third?”

The more questions we can ask at the higher-levels of thinking, the more we can engage not only the  students’ attention but their in-depth thinking.

Podcasts: Let Students Question and Let Listeners Learn

Podcast Questions

Most podcasts do not invite the listener to think about the topic. The listener is passive. The podcast seems more like a lecture than a dialogue.

The students can start off the podcast with an essential question about the topic or a critical problem such as “What impact is global warming having on you?”and then pause for about five seconds for the listener to think about the topic.

Your students can use a Question and Answer format about this higher level thinking topic. “Were you hotter than usual last summer?” “Was it due to a weather pattern or global warming?” Then they can give some possibilities about why it might be global warming. They can ask another question and offer some possible answers. They can frame their answers in the form of questions such as “Could it be….?” or “What does this image show you about the effects of global warming?”

You will have to model this format for the students and have them practice it. A good starting point is for them to identify what questions they have the topic and its impact on their lives.

Let’s change podcasts from boring mini-lectures to engaging thought provoking learning.This way not only do the students producing it learn the content to a high level of thinking but the listener also does. Share some examples of how your students cause others to think and question.

Developing ELA Inference Reading Skills Through Technology: ELA Prep-Question Words

A few  suggestions:

Provide students the following on their own laptop, in a small group on a computer, or as a whole class.

– Make sure each student knows what each question word asks. Have students word process all the different types of answers for each question.  Or have them create a concept map using Inspiration. For example for “When” question word, they can write hour, day, month, year, season, after, before, during… Have them share their answers. Have students compile a list for each question word. Many students do not realize the breadth of possible answers to the question words.
-Have them word process three sentences that answer “When” in three different ways and then write the question for each.  They might write “Yesterday I studied math. When did I study math? My brother goes skiing in December. When does my brother go skiing? I was born in 1985. When was I born?” Then the student trades laptops  or the files with another student who answers the “When” question for each sentence.

-Have students brainstorm in a group all the variations on a question word. For example, for “When” they might list the following “At what time…?”, “During what season…?

– Have students use a blog to share all of their different questions that can be used to used each question word.   Then ask students to read a passage and to write as many different questions as they can about the passage.

-Have student pairs read a passage and ask as many questions as they can about the passage.  The pair exchanges the questions with another pair.  Each pair answers the questions and they compare the different types of questions they asked and answered.  They make sure the other pair correctly answered the questions.

Technology Integration Questions

My position has changed this year so that I will be working with public schools in technology integation. I am excited since I have done this before about nine years ago. I will be interested to see how much technology integration has actually changed in P12 schools. I know that there has been an influx of technology into the schools and that the newer teachers know how to mechanically use technology.

The question is “How can I help teachers to improve student learning through technology?” I do many workhops and conference presentations for P12 teachers so I have some idea. There is a drastic difference between technology use and improving student learning through technology. Also, there is a drastic difference between improving student learning through technology and meeting school’s goals through technology use. I have done many in school inspections where I analyzed technology inspection and student learning.

Some questions I have for myself for this year are
How closely related is the teacher’s technology use to the stated student learning? It the particular use an effective and efficient one?
How many different technology use strategies do teachers employ in their class?
How many teachers want their students to interact with people from other states and nations so their students will be global students?
How willing are teachers to use data to measure student learning on a weekly basis?
How willing are teachers to change how the presently use technology if those uses are not focused on building or departmental goals?
Do teachers only focus technology use on the “big tests” or do they focus on 21st century skills?
How often do teachers model good technology use in their presentations?
How often is technology used to foster higher level thinking skills as opposed to lower level memorization skills?
